Here at HLM, we work hard to bring every client the best results possible. One of the ways we're able to do that is by balancing that hard work with team-building, fostering a sense of comradery among our team members, and having some plain ol' fun. Learn how HLM's Culture Committee leads this effort, and what you can expect if you're a new or prospective HLMer.
So What is HLM's Culture Committee?
HLM's Culture Committee is a group of six HLM Team Members (currently anyway, but they're always looking for more participants), across several different departments, who meet on a regular basis to plan fun and novel activities that encourage communication and connection between HLM departments, allowing team members to get to know each other - oftentimes despite being hundreds of miles apart.
The History of The Culture Committee
Like many businesses pre-pandemic, it was much easier for team members to meet one another and develop natural rapport and organic friendships simply by showing up to work.
As HLM was impacted by the pandemic and shifted to a mostly remote environment, we realized that we needed to be much more proactive about offering opportunities for team members to meet, interact, and learn about each other.
So, out of the significantly negative and long-lasting event that was the pandemic, arose the HLM Culture Committee. It always pays to look for the silver linings in life.
What Kinds of Events does the Culture Committee Coordinate?
Many different types of events! Below are samples of some events - virtual and otherwise - the Culture Committee has been responsible for putting together over the last few years.

- HLM's Annual Summer Camp - while we may not be able to get together in person every summer, we can certainly dress the part for all of Zoom to see!
- It's Dinner Time! Check out this awesome HLM cookbook our Culture Committee put together, featuring some of our Team Member's favorite dishes.
- St. Patrick's Day Scavenger Hunt - how many of these items can you retrieve? There just might be a pot of gold at the end for one lucky winner! A virtual pot of gold. It's not like the Culture Committee employs magical leprechauns. Or so we're told anyway...
- Spread The Love Challenge - the world could always use a little more love. That's why we encourage HLM Team Members to do something nice for someone every Valentine's Day.
- We know you'll just "Fall" for HLM and our Culture Committee after seeing all of the Fall events & activities we participate in throughout the months of October & November.
Virtual Happy Hours
While St. Patrick's Day is most certainly marked by mercilessly pinching those that have forgotten to wear their green attire, it's also marked by the annual HLM St. Patty's Day Virtual Happy Hour!
Below is just one example of an HLM Happy Hour lead by our Culture Committee that includes trivia, cocktail how-to's, and general merriment.
Regional Outings & Meetups
While HLM is a remote-first organization since the pandemic, we do have concentrations of team members in the areas of Birmingham, AL, Nashville TN, and Detroit, MI., so we'll occasionally coordinate in-person events for those that can attend.
Below are two examples of such events - a baseball game outing for our Detroit team members, and an outing to Top Golf in the Birmingham and Nashville area
Virtual Murder Mysteries & Halloween Shenanigans
Clearly the virtual murderer must have been HLM's Director of Content Marketing, in the library, with the candlestick - right? At least, that's what we determined during our last Virtual Halloween Celebration, where, among other things, our Culture Committee hosted a virtual game of Clue. Everyday Culture Committee Activities
In addition to the events and celebrations above, our Culture Committee also encourages everyday interactions between team members, sometimes in the form of simple prompts in our internal Slack channels. Here's a few examples of questions from our "Hot Take Tuesdays" series:

What's Next for HLM's Culture Committee?
We've talked a lot about HLM's virtual activities and how our culture has been impacted by the pandemic, and while business in general may never quite return to 100% pre-pandemic norms, we at HLM are investing in several in-person annual events that will bring our team members together in person - so keep an eye out for more info on those events in the coming months!
