7 Morning Habits of Successful Small Business Owners

By Annie Wissner

As a small business owner, you have a lot to think about.

From, “How will I make payroll next month?” to “I wonder if I could save some money by switching from UPS to the USPS?”

Your mind just won’t quit worrying, planning, strategizing, and/or thinking about all of the things going on in and around your business.

While there are plenty of ways to better manage your time so you can figure out all of the above, the real trick is to start each and every day on the right path. The path to success.

Successful small business owners are creatures of habit. They have routines that work for them, and they stick to it.

What do you do every morning to keep yourself on task and motivated?

Creating these habits will help you as you transition from a small business to larger corporation, all while keeping you grounded.

Here are 8 of the best morning habits that have worked for the masses, and may just work for you:

No, you can’t function just fine on 5 hours of sleep. Even if you think you can, imagine what you could do on a steady 7-9 hours of sleep each night. Hundreds of studies have proven sleep’s importance on brain functionality and productivity. Do what you need to do to get a good night’s sleep.

Wake Up Early.

There’s some merit to the phrase “the early bird gets the worm.” Most successful small business owners wake up early to clear their minds and get prepared for what’s on the day’s agenda. However, without proper rest, waking up early becomes null and void.

All it takes is five minutes to meditate or pray to get your soul in order. Doing this very early in the morning gives you purpose, drive and a clear mind.

Once your mind is clear, you will be able to see the day for what it is. You can now visualize new projects and things that you would like to see come to fruition. It helps shape your mindset and will give you a few ideas to focus on as you move forward.

Set goals.

It’s important to set daily goals that tie into your weekly goals. This will help focus on the things that are really important and refocus on things that are going by the wayside. Don’t just think about your goals; write them down and tell someone about them. This will help force you to stick to the goals that you’ve set out for yourself and your business.

Eat a good breakfast.

Regardless if you eat as soon as you wake up, or you choose to indulge after your early morning routine, eating breakfast gets you going the right way to prepare for the day ahead. By getting up early and planning a healthy breakfast (remember: you are what you eat), you’re more inclined to eat right and stay away from those energy-draining on-the-go meals.

Get moving.

This is the time when you can get that blood circulating. Doing some form of stretches or exercise will get the heart pumping and help clear the mind for everything that may occur throughout the day. This doesn’t mean you have to go to a gym – you can do exercises at home, or walk around the block a few times. This will help keep your mind sharp, allowing you to think about the upcoming day.

These early morning habits can keep you focused while your eyes remain on the prize. Every successful business person has a strategy - use these to help create yours.
